Normal
Start off by using Poison Arrow together with Rain of Arrows. They are both incredibly strong skills for leveling, especially if you want to level quickly. You can pick up a couple of Fire Traps as well. Try to get your hands on two Coral Rings as fast as possible. Pick up the Wrath Aura gem after killing Brutus. You want auras that reserve a fixed amount of mana, rather then having a percentage. Before facing Merveil, grab one or two Sapphire rings for cold resistance. This will keep you alive. Act 2 is going to be a walk in the park, thanks to all of the life nodes early on. Help Oak in order to get the +40 life reward. Pick up the Fork support gem and Lesser Multiple Projectiles. You will need these for later. Also, pick up a Frenzy gem and start leveling it up. You will use this as your single target ability together with Bear Traps.
Cruel
Start off by checking vendors for upgrades. You will need to keep your bow updated with your level. By this point you should be able to start looking for life and resistances on your items. While in Act 1 and Act 2, focus on getting every type of resistance above 40. Pick Grace, Anger and Faster Attacks whenever possible. Projectile Weakness is also be a viable option if you have the option to grab one. Kill every bandit for the extra skill point. Try to link Faster Attacks and Faster Projectiles to your Rain of Arrows for some extra damage. If you encounter mana problems, remove either gem. By this time your build should look something like this. By now you have a whole lot of life nodes, Blood Magic (level 45~) and Iron Grip. Pick Iron Grip before you get Blood Magic.
Merciless
Once in Merciless, make your way to The Ledge and farm it until you reach level 54, so that you may reach Heart of the Gladiator before proceeding. You should start trying to find a 4 link or a 5 link chest, for Lightning Arrow -- which you will now begin using. Link your Lightning Arrow to Faster Attacks, Life gain on Hit, and Lesser Multiple Projectiles (Green, Green, Red, Green). You may also want to try out the Fork you picked up earlier, this is viable for huge packs only, which both Ledge and Fellshrine have plenty of. If you are able to get a 5 link, pick a support gem that fits the color that provides damage. If you have enough chromatic orbs, try to get another red socket to link it with Weapon Elemental Damage. Pick up a Decoy Totem, or buy one, and start leveling it. This will be your tank until your gear improves. When you reach Act 2, make your way to Fellshrine and farm it until you feel strong/safe enough to progress. You may either save Kraityn for an extra Frenzy charge, or kill all of the bandits for +1 skill point. I suggest helping Kraityn. Work your way through Act 3 slowly. If you feel weak, farm either City of Sarn or Docks. After completing Act 3 and reaching around level 70, your build should look like this. If you put some effort into your gear, you should now be ready for maps.
Maps
Do not rush into maps, make sure your gear is generally good, and your resistances are all above 75. Have your Decoy totem (linked with Faster Casting if possible) ready, and all your auras activated. Move slowly and make use of your Decoy Totem. The key is to play it safe and stay above 50% health at all times. If your lightning arrow goes above 600 DPS at this point, I would suggest linking it with Chain. Continue going up in the skill tree, picking up Static Blows. After this, use your respec points, and additional regrets if needed, to remove the points from Iron Grip. These points will be used for Inner Force, and your build should now look something like this (Note that the 3x 10% weapon elemental nodes are selected in the ranger tree). Your single target DPS will be Frenzy, Elemental Hit, and Bear Trap. Start off with Frenzy until you reach the maximum number charges. Maintain these while using Elemental Hit and Bear Traps.
