Gear

Your main focus is to stack as much life and energy shield as possible, while maintaining enough mana to keep your summons up. If you can afford the stats, try to get some gear with increased item quantity or rarity, as this build is great for farming items and currency. Here are a few pieces of gear that are pretty much required for any good summoner:

Weapon

Get a Midnight Bargain as soon as possible. This is the best weapon in the game for a summoner. In the lower levels, feel free to use a Queen's Decree (2-handed sword), but try to upgrade it ASAP.

Shield

If you can afford it, get a Matua Tupua. No other shield even comes close to being so amazing for a summoner.

Amulet

Get a Sidhebreath Paua Amulet. It will give your minions a nice boost in damage, health, and speed while also providing you with a decent supply of mana. This should last you until you start grinding maps, at which point you'll want to upgrade it to a rare amulet.

Helmet

Get a rare helmet with +2 to minion gems.

Boots

Bones of Ullr, hands down. Amazing boots for a summoner.

Flasks

Get at least one Life Flask that heals your minions.

Guide

This build is based on SpencerRelly's build from the official Path of Exile forums. I have personally tested this build, and currently have a level 73 Necromancer.

Normal Difficulty

When you first start out, your summons will die in one hit. It's not even worth summoning them, so try to keep your summoning gems leveled and focus on using a good nuke spell like Freeze Pulse or Ice Spear. You're probably better off grouping with other players for awhile since things can get pretty tedious. Once you get Raise Spectre at level 19, these can tank for you a little, so that will help your survivability quite a bit.

Cruel Difficulty

By now, you're probably getting pretty frustrated, but keep going. You should have the Clarity and Discipline auras at the very least, which should make things much more tolerable. Grind in easy areas like The Ledge and Fellshrine Ruins, and make sure you stay in groups. Cruel Difficulty is by far the most difficult mode for a summoner. Toward Act 3, you can start using your summons. They'll still be a little weak, but they're good enough.

Merciless Difficulty

Now you can start using your summons at a more effective level. Use your Skeleton Totem and your nuke spell to make corpses for your spectres/zombies, then sit back and curse from a distance. You should have no problem soloing your way through Merciless with a few exceptions (Piety in The Crematorium will be nearly impossible to solo). Toward Act 2 or Act 3, you should have enough mana to support Spectres with LMP or GMP, so find some ranged casters (or anything that shoots chaos damage like snakes) and raise them. Alternatively, if you need a tank, swap out LMP/GMP with Added Chaos Damage and raise a fat mob like a golem or bear.

I was wondering how hard piety in crematorium is if you play this in normal league (default). Is it possible to take her out solo with this build? I am building a witch atm and am at act 3 now..

And just one other thing; is dominating blow a good combination with this build? Or should I avoid that?
